Windy City Women Riders
featuring a Ride in People's Choice Bike Show MORE INFO COMING SOON
The mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our Founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. Across the United States, throughout the month of September awareness activities will take place to educate and bring attention to three diseases: sickle cell, childhood cancer and leukemia / lymphoma. This is a special time at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital since these diseases are among those studied and treated at the hospital. The purpose of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to bring attention to childhood cancer—those who lose the battle as well as those who survive. You may see people wearing gold T-shirts or gold ribbons as part of awareness activities this month. That’s because our children are golden to us. Cancer is the number one disease-related killer among children. However, St. Jude is proud to say that treatment of childhood cancer is one of modern medicine’s true success stories. Intensive study on targeting individual therapy to each child has raised survival rates higher than any previous generations have ever seen. On the right-hand side of this page you will see a link that will take you to a chart of the latest cancer survival rates. During this month we also focus on the long-term needs and problems of survivors. In addition to studying treatment and cure of childhood cancer, St. Jude doctors and researchers follow the progress of our former patients for many years, constantly studying the long-term effects of cancer treatments. Our goal is to make treatments more effective while reducing any undesirable side effects.
